Moon Warriors, The (1993)

[director Sammo Hung Kam-Bo]

Andy Lau, Anita Mui, Maggie Cheung, and Damien Lau are all heroes and comic foils in this movie, but it is a killer whale that actually saves the day in this adventure. Damn near everybody dies in the end, but this killer whale bursts out of the water and floors the rather forgettable villain at a key moment. This part of the film is spectacular, as are the exciting sequences of the so-called Moon Warriors dashing through the forest. Sadly, the movie has an instantly forgettable plot, bad comedy, and lackluster performances throughout. These performers deserve better and luckily all of them got better in good movies (Maggie Cheung has starred in a number of Wong Kar-Wai’s essential works, Damien Lau has kicked it up in a gazillion movies, Andy Lau and Anita Mui shined in Moment of Romance and The Heroic Trio, respectively, as well as shining together in Savior of the Soul)
