November 17, 2002 • Film, Reviews

Country: Hong Kong
Director: Tsui Hark
Producer: Tsui Hark
Writer: Sa-Long Hui, Tsui Hark

Cast: Charlie Yeung Choi-Nei, Nicky Wu, Elvis Tsui Kam-Kong, Carrie Ng Ka-Lai, Lau Shun, Suen Hing, Hau Bing Bik, Lau Shui Kei, Yuen Sam.

Running Time: 108

Plot: A wealthy but socially unfavored Jin Dynasty landowner arranges a lucky marriage for his graceful, intelligent daughter, but he tries to further ensure her success by dressing her as a boy and sending her to school. His efforts backfire when she falls deeply and tragically in love with a gifted but destitute schoolmate.

After the failure of Green Snake and some of the later Once Upon a Time in China movies, Tsui Hark bounced back with this commercial hit, a Romeo-and-Juliet story that launched the career of Charlie Yoeh. Yoeh was a breath of fresh air in the late days of the Hong Kong new wave, a kind of follow-up actress, taking the ball that Anita Yuen created and rolling with it.

This project, though visually stunning, is tired moviemaking. It’s understandable, since Hark never really stopped producing and directing movies for a minute since 1978, but the movie ends up severely disappointing, because it’s just nothing new or interesting.
