Patlabor: The Original Series (1988)

November 17, 2003 • Film, Reviews

Country: Japan
Director: Mamoru Oshii
Producer:
Writer:
Cast: Mîna Tominaga, Toshio Furukawa
Running Time: 25 min (7 episodes)

Plot: The adventures of a giant robot police force unit.

With an amiable pace and some clever writing, this OAV series introduced the world to the world of Mamoru Oshii’s Patlabor (see Patlabor: The Movie 1 for an overview). But after a second (much longer) OAV series, a long-running TV show, and soon-to-be three Patlabor movies, this original series has all but disappeared from view. This is a shame because it’s far better than the TV series, and a good complement to the films. With it’s quirky, easygoing, and humorous stories and it’s slow-burning mysteries and suspense, the series is an excellent merger of philosophy and action.
