Picnic (1996)

Country: Japan
Director: Shunji Iwai

Writer:
Cast: Tadanobu Asano, Chara.

Three lunatics escape from an awful asylum in this earlier TV film by Shuji Iwai. It’s not the same caliber of movie as Iwai’s Swallowtail Butterfly or April Story. It does feature good cinematography and some beautiful music, but it doesn’t amount to much of anything besides some existential depression.

Chara plays an inmate who dresses in crow’s feathers. Tadanobu Asano plays an inmate who is constantly sexually abused by the nurses in the ward (it’s so weird!). Later, these two actors married. Their relationship began on this set. And Iwai would work with Chara again on his one-of-a-kind epic, Swallowtail Butterfly.

This movie, however, is worthless. The plot proceeds in such a straight line it’s hard to be surprised by what happens. It may be that the premise itself just isn’t that interesting.
