November 17, 2003 • Film, Profiles

Born in Hong Kong 1962, Tony Leung Chui-Wai left school at age 15 to support his family. He worked as a paper boy, then ended up selling home appliances. Following the advice of friend Stephen Chow, he applied for work at TVB. After he was admitted to the training school in 1982, his acting talents quickly caught many directors by surprise. He first gained his star status for doing a children’s show called “430 Space Shuttle.” His popularity exploded soon after the release of “Duke of Mount Deer” in 1984.

Tony is known to be a versatile actor, as well as an extremely popular one. Career high points include “A City of Sadness,” “Hard Boiled,” “Cyclo,” “Days of Being Wild,” “Ashes of Time,” Chungking Express,” and “Happy Together.” He was honored twice as the best actor in HKFA, and gained international recognition in several film festivals including Venice and the Asian-Pacific.

Recently, Tony garnered the Best Actor award at Cannes. His latest films “Tokyo Raiders” and Jackie Chan’s “Gorgeous” are still raking in ticket sales across the world.
