November 17, 2003 • Film, Reviews

Country: Hong Kong
AKA: Shaolin’s Five Founders, Legend of the Future Shaolin, Legends of Shaolin
Director: Wong Jing
Writer: Wong Jing

Cast: Jet Li, Chingmy Yau, Deannie Yip, Sung Young Chen, Chuen-Hua Chi, Damian Lau, Miu Tse, Lung Wei Wang

Running Time: 94 min.

Plot: Martial arts master Jet Li stars in this high-kicking historical revenge spectacular as a kung fu student trained at a Shaolin monastery. Li joins rebel forces in an attempt to overthrow the ruling oppressors, and is betrayed by a fellow student.

Jet Li’s bad version of Lone Wolf and Cub, with an unnappealingly precocious little kid as the cub. It’s one of Jet Li’s worst movies, one of the lowest points in his career. It’s a film that is without a plot, without characters, without much quality in it’s construction. There are a few action scenes, but most of them pay too much attention to the little child, who, though he may be somewhat promising as a martial artist, isn’t at all formidable in the terms of kung fu movies.
