Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds (1986)

November 17, 2003 • Film, Reviews

Country: Japan
Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Producer: Tohru Hara
Writer: Hayao Miyazaki
Cast: Sumi Shimamoto, Mahito Tsujimura
Running Time: 116 Min

Plot: In the far future, man has destroyed the Earth in the “Seven Days of Fire”. Now, there are small pockets of humanity that survive. One pocket is the Valley of Wind where a princess named Nausicaa tries to understand, rather than destroy the Toxic Jungle. Note that the old US release titled Warriors of the Wind is an entirely kiddified version which edits the original movie heavily, thus creating an entirely different story

Hayao Miyazake uncomplicated his own graphic novel series to make this 2 ? hour production. Perhaps he uncomplicated it a little too much. The movie is enjoyable enough, nice to look at, but it doesn’t approach the majesty and meaning of the manga. As Miyazake’s first animated feature as a solo director, it is surprisingly good: the assured style and imagery announced a major talent in the world of animation.
