Executioners (1993)

November 17, 2003 • Film, Reviews

[director Johnnie To Kei-Fung]
Cast: Anita Mui Yim-Fong, Maggie Cheung Man-Yuk, Michelle Yeoh

A sequel shot simultaneously with The Heroic Trio, this one is set in an even more dystopian future. A phantom-of-the-opera-type villain controls the city’s water and ransoms it off. Meanwhile, Maggie Cheung steals it from him, Michelle Yoeh joins the rebels against him, and Anita Mui chills in a bubble-bath with her character’s kid. When Mui’s husband, Maggie’s lover, and the leader of the free world all get executed by the evil freak, the trio get together again. However, it seems their unique teamwork has fallen a couple of notches, as this villain wipes the floor with them repeatedly. Finally, Michelle Yoeh is ripped apart before managing to blow up the horrendous villain.

As you can see, it’s a much darker movie than the first (a somewhat impressive feat in and of itself). This, plus its severely disjointed plot make this a sequel inferior to the original. There is little reason to watch this movie, save for some cool martial arts and a few gory scare moments. Oh, and the scene where the three stars hit the bubble bath together.
