[director Benny Chan]

This is not a great film. But dammit, it’s fun. The ever-capable craftsman Benny Chan took the reigns of this simple, not-too-realistic police actioner and made a fun, funny, exciting movie. It’s exciting because of the vigor that everyone involved in the production seems to have invested in it. The cast, comprised of Lau Ching-Wan and a slew of great supporting actors (from Jordan Chan to Francis Ng), comport themselves with unadulterated energy that gives the whole affair a warm, ingratiating charm.

Lau plays a tough cop who’s set up by a jealous peer and bumped from homicide to the emergency response unit. He refuses to play by the rules and fights with his superiors and his second-in-command. But ultimately, he’s paired with a group of free-spirited oddballs, the Bad-News Bears of the police force, and together they challenge the system and bust a couple of mercenary thugs (Yu Rong Gang and Anthony Wong) who are making a bizarre heist.

The actors all give it their best, making sophistication where there was none to begin with. It’s nothing new, but it’s more fun than the last 10 cops n’ robbers movies I’ve seen all combined.
